The “exert its control” is not the terminology I would use. These terms would be apt if the military tried to interfere in films they weren’t involved in. The fact is that the producers and directors have approach the military and asked for a favour and in turn have agreed to compromise their film or pander to the military so that they can have some cool sequences with tanks shooting things.
The wholesale romanticisation of the military is problematic, and worries me quite deeply. But I suggest that the problem lies with a lack of integrity on the part of the filmmakers, not the military.
